Colouring Outside the Lines: 10 of the Best Special Order Supercars on the Market

From Q and MSO to PTS and Tailor Made, we explore how bold factory colours add character, rarity and value to today’s supercar market.

Spec can make or break a car, and that’s why so many buyers play it safe to avoid alienating prospective buyers when the time comes to move it on. But what if we said to hell with the next guy, and ordered exactly what we wanted? Well, there are an increasing number of people doing just that, hence the rise in Porsche PTS, McLaren MSO, Ferrari Tailor Made, Lamborghini Ad Personam and Aston Martin Q.

These factory bespoke programmes allow your imagination to run wild and your wallet to run dry in pursuit of the car you always dreamed of. Funnily enough, whilst the safe black you chose for resale is indeed a strong choice for residuals, these brave custom orders often comand a premium because of their rarity.

Whatever the case for resale, I admire the imagination, and in some cases the bravery, of custom colours that are as much a point of interest as the car they’re painted onto. From eye-poppingly bold to if-you-know-you-know subtleties, here are the best custom-coloured supercars we could find at our dealer partners right now.

Aston Martin DBX 707

Q Kermit Green

2023 (23) | 30,000 Miles | £124,880

Aston Martin DBX 707

Ok, not a supercar, but it’s sure the colour of one! Of all the DBX on Auto Trader right now, three quarters are in corportate-friendly black, grey, silver or white. This one alone is enough to tip that balance thanks to Q Division’s Kermit Green. This is a showcase that the only limitation at Q Division is your imagination, or indeed bravery, and if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like to park up alongside the same car you’re driving, this is for you.

The DBX 707 has enough oomph to back up the visual drama thanks to its 707hp twin-turbo V8, and with just 30,000 miles on the clock, this one is listed in the ballpark of £100k less than its original price. It won’t be for everyone, but someone will simply have to have it, and they’ll be getting a lot of supercar-baiting bus for the money.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster

Q Ion Blue

2024 (24) | 972 Miles | £214,950

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster

A slightly more subtle colour from Q this time in the form of Ion Blue, beautifully draped over the latest V12 Vantage Roadster. If one of 249 worldwide wasn’t rare enough, the Q paint makes sure of it. The gorgeous blue is paired with boatloads of carbon on the inside and out, including a fixed rear wing and carbon bucket seats.

The new twin-turbo V12 puts out 700hp through the rear wheels in a ploom of tyre smoke, and whilst this might not be from Aston’s bygone naturally-aspirated era, it’s a real rarity that’s up for grabs with less than 1,000 miles.

Ferrari 488 70th Anniversary

Tailor Made Pure Metal Silver

2018 | 2,432 Miles | £164,991

Ferrari 488 70th Anniversary

Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary programme created some fascinating one-off combinations, and this 488 GTB in Tailor Made Pure Metal Silver is a great example of subtlety done properly. Most will think it’s ‘just’ a silver Ferrari, others will nod at just how cool it is. Rather than shouting, the finish accentuates the 488’s curves and creases more than standard silver. The classy theme continues inside with Avorio leather and a total absence of carbon fibre.

To celebrate their 70th Anniversary in 2017, a limited run of 350 70th Anniversary cars were built in 70 colour schemes commemorating the best Ferraris of the past. This 488, named "The Wedding Gift", was inspired by the one-off 360 Barchetta which was gifted to Luca Di Montezemolo for his wedding.

With just 2,432 miles and listed at £164,991, it offers a lot of Ferrari history, performance and individuality for the money, and its story is a great conversation-starter.

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta 70th Anniversary

Tailor Made Blu Pozzi

2017 | 6,289 Miles | £279,000

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta 70th Anniversary

Another 70th Anniversary Ferrari, this time an F12 in deep, elegant Blu Pozzi, a historic Ferrari shade which suits the V12’s long bonnet far more than any red. Adorning that long bonnet is a painted white stripe, and the interior is finished in Blu Sterling heritage leather which has an aged look to it.

This is a one of one car inspired by the legendary 340 MM Vignale Spider, and as with the 488 above, it could fly under the radar or it could spark lengthy conversations from those who recognise what it is.

With 6,289 miles, it’s low mileage but has been exercised enough to avoid feeling like a museum piece, so you can continue to drive it guilt-free. £279,000 sounds a lot for an F12, but it doesn’t sound a lot for a one-off naturally-aspirated V12 Ferrari, so it all depends how much you want that exclusivity.

Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae Roadster

Ad Personam Arancio Bruciata

2022 | 1,700 Miles | £499,995

Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae Roadster

The Ultimae marks the end of the Aventador’s long life, and finished in Ad Personam Arancio Bruciata, this Roadster feels like a proper send-off spec. The burnt orange metallic has real depth and shows off Lamborghini’s theatrical design language far better than the safe greys many owners chose.

At £499,995 with just 1,700 miles on the clock, it’s sitting around the ballpark of its 1,000hp successor, the Revuelto, but as collectors increasingly value “last of” cars with personality, and with just 250 Roadsters produced, it’s not hard to see why.

Lamborghini Revuelto

Ad Personam Amaranto

2024 | 95 Miles | £479,995

Lamborghini Revuelto

Speaking of the the Revuelto... This car had big shoes to fill after the Aventador, and in Ad Personam Amaranto it does so with real drama. Many of the Revueltos on the market are in Ad Personam colours as owners spare no expense, but I chose this one as it’s almost grown-up by Lamborghini standards, but it’s enough to look truly intriguing without shouting too loudly.

With just 95 miles, this is effectively a delivery-mileage car, so if you want the latest and greatest, the next chapter of Lamborghini lunacy without the wait, this is for you.

McLaren 765LT Spider

MSO Bespoke Fistral Blue

2021 (71) | 5,150 Miles | £344,995

McLaren 765LT Spider

McLaren Special Operations can transform a car, and this 765LT Spider in MSO Bespoke Fistral Blue certainly isn’t a shy example. The colour is even more bold than the car itself and contrasts sharply against the LT’s abundence of carbon fibre.

The Spider format already commands a premium over the coupe, and when combined with a standout MSO finish, it makes this a seriously appealing thing. With 5,150 miles, it’s still fresh but begging for you to pump up those rookie numbers.

McLaren Senna

MSO Satin Graphite Grey

2018 (68) | 300 Miles | £794,990

McLaren Senna

This is an example of the opposite side of MSO — stealth. The Senna is a car where spec genuinely changes perception, and I feel like purposeful aggression is the look that best suits it, which is exactly what MSO Satin Graphite Grey achieves.

The satin finish tones lets the Senna’s insane aero do the talking and blends subtly with the satin carbon fibre — perfect for the Senna’s track-first identity. With just 300 miles, this is effectively collector mileage, and increasingly rare as many Sennas were actually driven hard. Despite the super-low mileage, limited production of just 500 and MSO paint, this Senna is still sitting around list price. How long until their day of appreciation comes, time will tell.

Porsche 911 (992) GT3

PTS Yachting Blue Metallic

2023 | 5,570 Miles | £167,995

Porsche 911 (992) GT3

Porsche’s Paint To Sample programme remains one of the most coveted in the business, and whilst it’s often used for fantastic bold colours (stay tuned), Yachting Blue Metallic is quite the connoisseur’s choice on a 992 GT3. Originally introduced as a standard colour choice for the Panamera in 2010, it’s rich, understated and must be one of the rarest PTS choices.

PTS always carries a premium, but it will still carry that premium when you come to sell it, and it’ll always stand proud in a sea of grey and black cars. This one also has a mega spec including ceramic brakes, bucket seats, carbon roof and front lift, as well as full PPF to keep your special colour looking fresh.

Porsche 718 Spyder RS

PTS Signal Yellow

2024 | 2,450 Miles | £144,991

Porsche 718 Spyder RS

Ah yes, this is more of what we’re used to from PTS. The Spyder RS is one of the most engaging modern Porsches, and finished in PTS Signal Yellow, it looks truly special too. Signal Yellow is a heritage colour that just works perfectly on GT models, and here, it’s complimented with the Weissach Package as well as matching yellow stitching throughout the interior.

The market has really softened on these, perhaps due to the fiddly roof or their relative availability on the used markets, but PTS examples are few and far between, so even in a softening market, one like this will always stay strong. This is one of the most fun cars you can drive on the road, and they’re a cracking buy right now. As allocations tighten and demand stays strong, colour choice is becoming increasingly important on RS models.

HONOURABLE MENTION

Porsche 911 (997) GT3 RS 4.0

PTS Guards Red

NOW SOLD

Porsche 911 (997) GT3 RS 4.0

Despite being sold, this car had to be mentioned as it’s the very reason I decided to put this article together! I just had to feature it, and figured it would be cool to choose some other custom coloured cars alongside it, but then, unsurpiringly, it sold!

There are just 600 4.0 RS in the world, and the vast majority were offered in the standard colour choices of white or black, so to see one in Guards Red is just jaw-dropping. It’s thought that just 39 4.0s were produced in PTS, so if a standard car is a collector’s piece, this is a unicorn, and hopefully it will be used and shown rather than hidden away in a bubble.
