The Modern-Day Unicorn — Honda NSX Spotted for Sale

The modern-day Honda NSX is a rare sight, so join us for a deep dive into the history of the NSX and a look around this low-mileage car for sale.

The original NSX was a revelation for Honda in the early ‘90s. A mid-engined sports car, with development input from one of the most successful racing drivers of all time, and dynamics to dance around the outside of Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the time. All that has made the NSX a legend of Japanese car culture.

The original car was in production for 15 years, then, after and 11 year break, the NSX returned in 2016. But, it wasn’t the NSX as we knew it. The new car was a four-wheel-drive, dual-clutch, hybrid supercar focused on technology and numbers, a world apart from the raw simplicity of the original, but people who owned them, loved them, and given the low production numbers, values have remained high to this day, especially now this model too is out of production. Whilst some might not even know what the new NSX is, to car people, it is very cool indeed.

Whilst far less flamboyant than something like a Lamborghini Huracan, the NSX has a look all its own, sort of like something out of a Japanese Sci Fi movie. Inside is much less striking and the interior looks quite familiarly Honda, but it’s very well screwed together, swimming in tech, and this car is all about the drive, not what anyone else thinks of you when you drive it.

Honda NSX

It’s powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 teamed up with three electric motors, delivering a combined 573hp to all four wheels via a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. I referenced the Huracan, but more than that, the NSX was actually a Porsche 911 Turbo or McLaren 570GT rival, intended to offer blistering performance in a daily usable package.

Despite tipping the scales at almost 1,800kg, performance is certainly up there with its rivals of the time, with 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 191mph, and those electric motors helping with initial shove before the turbochargers are ready to give their full force.

The NSX was much more popular in the US wearing the more luxurious Acura badge (like Lexus to Toyota), but it seems there are just over 100 examples roaming around the UK, and it may be one of the rarest cars of the past decade to see at Supercar Driver events. I recall one member having one from new and he used to use it frequently, but since then, they’ve become like a modern unicorn.

It isn’t often you see one up for sale either, so when we saw our friends at Alexanders Prestige advertise this car, we couldn’t resist featuring it. It has been used very sparingly since its first registration in 2017, covering just 1,480 miles, but maybe its new owner won’t be so shy and will grace our events with an NSX once more.
