From motorsport fan to founder of The Car Crowd, David Spickett reveals how he's redefining car ownership and making dream cars accessible to all.
Hi, I’m David Spickett, and I’m the founder of The Car Crowd, a platform that allows like-minded enthusiasts to come together and own the cars of their dreams. For me, it’s all about democratising car ownership, especially for those who are just as passionate about cars as I am but perhaps can’t take the plunge on their own. Whether it’s for investment or just the joy of driving a supercar, my mission is to lower the barriers to entry and make owning iconic vehicles accessible to everyone.
Cars have been in my blood since I was a child. Growing up, I spent countless hours with my dad, working on his cars and exploring the world of motorsport. From the age of four, I was surrounded by cars at places like Lydden Hill and Brands Hatch, watching legends race Rallycross and iconic vehicles like Metro 6R4s and Marzi Delta Integrales. I still vividly remember the thrill of spitting flames through the Welsh forests on the RAC Rally, an experience that left an indelible mark on me.
My childhood was shaped by the roar of engines, the smell of fuel, and the exhilarating atmosphere of motorsport. I was always drawn to the action, the precision, and the camaraderie of the racing world. Whether it was touring cars or the magic of Rallycross, cars weren’t just something I admired — they were a way of life.
From an early age, I helped my dad with his car collection, keeping detailed records of auction results, maintaining ledgers and blogs to track the market and help him make smart decisions on which cars to invest in. The goal was always to find vehicles that fueled his passion but also ensured he wasn’t losing money — ideally even making a little profit along the way. This was my first taste of combining my passion with the financial side of car ownership.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of managing car collections for family and friends, and I’ve seen firsthand how the right car can not only be a joy to own but also a savvy investment. But the idea that really sparked the creation of The Car Crowd was the realisation that owning a dream car shouldn’t be exclusive to a select few. I wanted to find a way to bring together people who shared that same passion for cars, providing an opportunity to own a piece of automotive history without needing to break the bank, and that journey started with a Caterham.
In 2015, I desperately wanted a track car, but with a new house and a second baby on the way, it looked like it would just remain a pipe dream. That was until I found out that two other colleagues had a similar dream. This was the first time I had explored shared ownership and shared experience, and it started that fire around creating something that lowers the water level for ownership, investment and enjoyment.
While my heart has always been in motorsport and cars, my professional life has also been deeply rooted in the world of regulated businesses and financial services. From mortgages to lending, I’ve gained invaluable experience in running businesses that are regulated, structured, and focused on compliance and transparency. These skills helped shape how I approached The Car Crowd, ensuring that it wasn’t just a platform for sharing cars but a fully secured, professionally managed business offering an innovative way for people to come together and invest in high-value vehicles.
Bringing these two worlds together — cars and finance — allowed me to create a platform that not only offers a unique investment opportunity but also builds a community of passionate individuals who can share their love for cars and racing. The Car Crowd gives everyone a chance to own part of an incredible collection of classic cars, supercars, or race cars while providing a professional, secure, and enjoyable experience.
The Car Crowd isn’t just about investment — it’s about community, passion, and shared experiences. My goal has always been to make it easier for people to experience the joy of owning and driving dream cars, whether for pleasure or as part of a growing investment. It’s about creating a space where enthusiasts can come together to experience the thrill of motorsport, the beauty of supercars, and the satisfaction of watching their investment appreciate in value.
I’ve poured my heart and soul into The Car Crowd, combining years of experience with a deep love for cars to create something truly unique. I’m excited to continue this journey, to share my passion, and to welcome more people into the world of car ownership — where the only limit is your enthusiasm.
