First GMA S1 LM Sells for Over $20 Million!

A new record has been set as the first Gordon Murray S1 LM goes under the hammer at RM Sotheby's Las Vegas auction.

The first Gordon Murray S1 LM commission represents something very few modern machines can claim. A direct successor to the McLaren F1 LM, created with a singular purpose. To honor the greatest achievement in Murray's career and to build the purest expression of his philosophy.

Only five S1 LMs will ever exist. This first commission includes a full collaborative build with Gordon Murray and development driver Dario Franchitti. It carries the traits that define the S1 LM. A 4.3 liter Cosworth V12 producing 700 horsepower at 12,100 rpm. A six speed manual gearbox. A targeted dry weight of 957 kilograms. Carbon fiber surfaces shaped for efficiency and feel, with gold wrapped Inconel exhaust work that recalls the original F1.

The car is more than engineering. Murray created the S1 LM during his battle with cancer, describing it as a reminder of why he builds cars. That personal connection, combined with its lineage to the McLaren F1 LM, fuels its importance among collectors.

During live bidding in Las Vegas, the S1 LM was flown above the city beneath a helicopter, creating one of the most dramatic auction scenes in recent memory.

The result stands as the most expensive new car ever sold at auction, excluding charitable sales. The final price reached $20,630,000 USD.
